Types of Computer Virus | What are computer virus?

Types of Computer Virus.

In this post we are going to talk about types of computer virus, a computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself and infect a computer. The term Viruses, Worms and Trojans are use to recognize a computer viruses.

Computer viruses are also a type of computer software which we use them to ease our task on computer but the main different is that the computer viruses are used to spy or damage ones computer or used to do some illegal tasks, that’s why they are called Viruses.

Viruses are computer Program developed to copy themselves and infect others files stored on the computer.

These are malicious programs that move form one computer to computer by attaching themselves Virus can automatically be transferred from one computer to another when its host is taken to the target computer, for example an user can sent ti through a network or the Internet or carried it on a removable storage medium such  as CD, DVD, USB pen drive or other storage medium.

Viruses can cause destruction to the entire file system which in result would need to reinstall and reload the whole system again.

The first ever virus named “Creeper was first detected on ARPANET, in the early 1970’s. It was and experimental self-replicating program written by Bob Thomas at BBN Technologies. Creeper infected some DEC PDP-10 computers running on the TENEX Operation system.

Here is the list or types of computer viruses which We will explain below these threats in details.

  • Trojan Horse
  • Worm
  • Boot Sector Virus
  • Program or File Virus
  • Multipartite Virus
  • Stealth Virus
  • Micro Virus
  • Logic Bomb

Types-of-computer-virus

1. Trojan Horse

Trojan, also referred to as a Trojan horse, is non-self replicating program that appears to perform a desirable function for the user but instead facilitates unauthorized access to the user’s computer system. The term Trojan is derived from the Trojan Horse story in Greek mythology. Trojan horse is virtually a harmless program in itself. Like a virus or a worm, it neither corrupts other files on the system nor takes up the memory part. Nevertheless, the effect of a Trojan could be even more dangerous. In fact, at the backend, these programs perform some malicious activities like upload (send) some sensitive files and information from the computer and at the same time download some unwanted files onto the computer.- With the help of Trojan, harms that could be done by a hacker on a target computer system are- Data theft (like password, credit card info etc)-  Installation of unwanted software- Downloading or uploading of files

– Keystroke logging

– Viewing the user’s screen

– Wasting computer storage space

– Crashing the computer

2. Worm:

A computer worm is a self-replication computer program. It uses computer network to send copies of itself to other computers on the network. It is a program made to replicate automatically. A worm replicates continuously until the entire hard disk space and memory are eaten up and it may do so without any user intervention. This kind of self replication programs spread over the entire hard disk and memory consequently and slow down the system. It only eats up the memory.

3. Boot Sector Virus:

Boot sector virus is developed to destroy or infect the boot sector of the disk where Master Boot Record (MBR) is stored. MBR is small program which is responsible for booting the computer system. Examples of such virus are Danis Boot, Devel 941, Disk killer etc.

4. Program or File Virus:

A program virus for file virus infects application programs. They may attach themselves to any .com, .exe, DRV (driver) and SYS (system files). On the infected program is executed; it remains present in the main memory (RAM) even if file is closed. As we execute another new file the virus attaches itself from the main memory in the new file. Example of program or file viruses are: acid rain, alien 298 and Crazy A.

5. Multipartite Virus:

Multipartite viruses have combination features of boot sector viruses and program viruses. They can infect both the application programs and the boot sector of a disk. Example of Multipartite viruses are: Invader, flip, Tequila etc.

6. Stealth Virus:

One of the most dangerous types of virus which rarely gives information about the presence of it in your computer system. Example of Stealth Viruses are: Frodo, Joshi, Whale, etc.

7. Micro Virus:

A Micro virus, often written in the scripting language for Microsoft program such as MS Word and Excel. is spread in Microsoft Office by infecting documents and spreadsheets.

8. Logic Bomb:

It is a piece of code and executes when a specific condition has been satisfied. It would be a virus that waits to execute until is has infected a certain number of hosts. Example of Logic Bomb virus is: time bomb computer virus.
